Both. The traditional 10th anniversary gift is tin, and aluminum sits on the same line of the list. Tin is the older listing and the one most guides print first. Aluminum was added beside it, and today most gifts sold as "tin" are aluminum anyway. The modern 10th anniversary gift is diamond jewelry.
So if you landed here because a shop (ours included) says "aluminum" while every list you've read says "tin," you haven't picked the wrong metal. This guide explains why the list reads that way, where diamonds honestly fit, what to write, and the aluminum pieces we make in our Berkeley studio, with who each one is for.

What is the 10th anniversary gift?
The traditional 10th anniversary gift is tin or aluminum in the US, and tin in the UK. The modern gift is diamond jewelry. The tenth anniversary flower is the daffodil, the gemstone is diamond, and the colors are silver and blue. Most couples choose one of the metals, a diamond, or both.
| 10th anniversary | |
|---|---|
| Traditional gift (US) | Tin or aluminum |
| Traditional gift (UK) | Tin |
| Modern gift (US) | Diamond jewelry |
| Flower | Daffodil |
| Gemstone | Diamond |
| Colors | Silver, blue |
The metals are settled. Flower, gemstone and color lists vary by source; these are the ones cited most often.
Is the 10th anniversary tin or aluminum?
Both count. The traditional US list gives the tenth as tin or aluminum, and the UK list gives tin. Tin appears first because it's the older listing. Aluminum carries the same idea in a metal people actually use now, and most things sold as tin anniversary gifts are aluminum or tin-plated steel.
Your kitchen explains the swap better than any gift list. "Tin foil" started giving way to aluminum in 1910, when the first aluminum foil rolling plant opened in Switzerland, and within a few decades the roll in every drawer was aluminum. The name never changed. Neither did "tin can," even though cans are tin-plated steel or aluminum. Nobody recorded the day aluminum joined tin on the anniversary list, but everyday English had made the same swap long before and kept the old word.
If you want literal tin, look for pewter, which is 85 to 99 percent tin. Pure tin on its own is soft enough to bend by hand and melts at about 232°C (450°F), which is why so little is made from it.
We make our tenth-anniversary pieces in aluminum. It's on the same line of the list, it's light enough to hang anywhere, and it doesn't rust.
What does aluminum symbolize for a 10th anniversary?
Aluminum stands for strength that protects itself, and for something precious that became part of everyday life. It shields itself from corrosion, and it was once worth more than gold before it became the most ordinary metal in the house. Tin, its partner on the list, adds flexibility: it bends by hand without breaking.
That's the short version. Here's what the two metals say when you look closer.
It was precious before it was everyday. In 1884 the Washington Monument was capped with a 100-ounce pyramid of aluminum, at the time as valuable as silver and the largest piece of aluminum in the world. Two years later a new smelting process made it cheap, and it went into pots and pans, then foil, then cans. The metal didn't change; its price did. Ten years in, most of what's precious between you looks ordinary from the outside: the drive home, the same side of the bed, the person across the table.
It protects itself. Bare aluminum grows an oxide skin about five nanometers thick that shields it from further corrosion. That's why it doesn't rust. A decade in, you've both learned to cover a scratch before it spreads.
Tin makes a sound when it bends. Bend a bar of pure tin and it crackles. Metallurgists call it "tin cry," the sound of its crystals shifting. Ten years is long enough to know exactly what the other person sounds like under strain, and to hear it early.
It's about a third the weight of year six. Iron marked your sixth anniversary. Aluminum weighs about a third as much for the same size. Not less solid, just lighter to carry, which is a fair description of a good tenth year.
What's the traditional vs. modern 10th anniversary gift?
Tin and aluminum are the traditional 10th anniversary gifts; diamond jewelry is the modern one. Choose tin or aluminum for a keepsake that carries your story, and a diamond for something worn every day that marks the milestone. They aren't competing gifts, and plenty of couples give one of each.
| Tin | Aluminum | Diamond | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Which list | Traditional (US and UK) | Traditional (US, listed with tin) | Modern (US) |
| What it stands for | Flexibility; keeping what matters | Lightness, and strength that protects itself | Permanence and brilliance |
| Worn or kept | Kept | Kept, often used daily | Worn |
| Works best as | Pewter pieces, a literal tin of something | Wall art, trays, maps, photo prints | A band, pendant or earrings |
| Watch out for | Most "tin" gifts are steel or aluminum; buy pewter for the real metal | Generic metal signs with a "10" printed on them | Buying small just to tick the box |
Should I give a diamond or aluminum for our 10th anniversary?
If they've been hoping for diamond jewelry, buy the diamond. A $99 tray doesn't replace a ring, and we'd rather lose the sale than have you give one in place of the other. The two do different jobs, though: the diamond is worn, the aluminum piece holds your story, and many couples give both.
Year ten is the only anniversary where someone ends up weighing a $99 tray against a ring, so it's worth being plain about it. The diamond says still. The aluminum piece stays home and holds the story: the street you lived on, the sky the night you married. Adding a $99 tray to a diamond barely moves the total. Swapping a diamond for a tray changes the gift entirely.
- Buy the diamond if they've mentioned it more than once, the original ring was a placeholder you promised to upgrade, or they wear jewelry every day.
- Skip it if they rarely wear jewelry, or this year's budget is going to a trip or a house. A small diamond bought to tick a box usually feels like exactly that.
- Give both if the budget allows. The ring goes on their hand; the map tray is where it sleeps.
It also helps to know who wrote the lists. The year-by-year version most Americans use was expanded in 1937 by the American National Retail Jewelers Association, and "A Diamond Is Forever" was written for De Beers in 1947. None of that makes a diamond the wrong gift. It just means the jewelry trade has had a hand in these lists from the start.
And if you are buying the stone, lab-grown is now a mainstream choice rather than a compromise: lab-grown diamonds appeared in 51% of newly appraised engagement rings in the first half of 2026, up from 6% in 2019, according to BriteCo's 2026 price index.

1. Glow-in-the-dark aluminum star map: for the night it all started
Aluminum Glow-in-the-Dark Star Map · from $109
The night sky exactly as it looked above a place and date you choose, usually the wedding night. By day it reads as clean wall art on aluminum. With the lights off, the stars glow, an effect Niki introduced to this market years before it became common.
This is our most-reviewed aluminum piece by a wide margin. "This was the perfect 10th anniversary gift for my husband. It is beautiful and personal," wrote Aleeya. One couple split the design between them: she chose the star map, he suggested wrapping their wedding song around it. "So 1 gift from each other with both ideas together."
Best for: the one who still talks about the wedding night. 8×10 ($109), 10×12 ($129) or 12×16 in ($159), black or white frame, with room for names, coordinates, vows or your own wording.
2. Aluminum map tray: for the place, and the ring
Personalized Aluminum Map Tray · from $99
A catchall tray printed with a custom map of one place: where you met, the venue, the first apartment, or the house you've spent the decade in. It lives on the nightstand or by the door and holds the ring, keys and watch. If a new diamond is part of this anniversary, this is where it spends the night.
Every map gets checked before it's made. "She confirmed difficult-to-spell location names (map) and got it here super fast!" wrote Phil.
Best for: the partner who takes their ring off in the same spot every night. Small 5×5 in ($99) or large 8×8 in ($119).
3. Aluminum catchall tray with your wording: for the thing you've never said out loud
Customizable Aluminum Catchall Tray · $99
A wood tray with a personalized aluminum plate set into it: your names, your date, and a line only the two of you would understand. There are wording ideas further down this page.
Best for: the one who keeps every card you've written.
4. Aluminum wireless charging tray: for the phone on the nightstand
Aluminum Wireless Charging Tray · $119
The same personalized aluminum plate, with a wireless charging spot beside it. The phone charges, the ring and watch sit next to it, and your map or wording is the last thing they see before lights out.
Best for: the husband who says he doesn't need anything. It has a job, so it gets used.
5. Aluminum photo wall art: for the family you've become
Personalized Aluminum Photo Wall Art · from $99
Your photo printed onto aluminum, in color or black and white. At ten years, the family photo often has more people in it than the wedding photo did. That's the one to print.
Best for: whoever keeps the family photos. 8×10 ($99), 10×12 ($129) or 12×16 in ($149), black or white frame.
6. Aluminum magnet pin map: for ten years of places
Personalized Aluminum Magnet Pin Map · from $99
A USA, world, or city and state map with up to 10 custom pins, each labeled with a short name. Ten pins for ten years works nicely: every home, every trip, the hospital where someone new arrived. "Bought for my wife for our 10th anniversary… it is a high quality item," one husband wrote.
Best for: the couple who've moved, traveled, or both. 8×10 ($99), 10×12 ($129) or 12×16 in ($149).
7. The bedside set: for the ring and the phone
Charging Tray + Catchall Tray Set · $189
The charging tray and the catchall tray together, one for each side of the bed or one for each of you, at a set discount. Add a picture light for the full set at $249.
Best for: anyone giving a diamond this year. The ring gets its own tray.
How do I choose a 10 year anniversary gift for my husband or wife?
Pick by habit, not by gender. Think about where their day starts and ends: someone who takes a ring off in the same spot every night wants a tray, someone who still talks about the wedding night wants a star map, and someone already planning the next trip wants a pin map. The table below matches habits to gifts.
| If they... | Give | Why it works |
|---|---|---|
| Still talk about the wedding night | Glow-in-the-dark star map | Built from that exact sky |
| Take their ring off in the same spot every night | Aluminum map tray | Used daily, and it holds the ring |
| Keep every card you've written | Wording catchall tray | Your words, somewhere they'll touch every day |
| Charge their phone on the nightstand | Wireless charging tray | Phone, ring and watch in one spot |
| Have more people in the family photo than the wedding photo | Aluminum photo wall art | The decade in one frame |
| Have moved, traveled, or both | Magnet pin map | Up to ten pins, one for each year |
| Are also getting a ring from you | Bedside tray set | The ring gets a place to sleep |
For him: if he "doesn't need anything," give him something with a job. The wireless charging tray and the map tray both earn their spot on the nightstand.
For her: if diamond jewelry is already on the list, add the star map or map tray as the half that holds the story. If jewelry isn't her thing, the star map is our most-reviewed tenth anniversary piece.
What should I write on a 10th anniversary gift?
Keep it short: under 12 words on a tray, with the longer message in the card. The lines that land are specific rather than clever: your wedding date and this year's side by side, the exact number of days you've been married, the coordinates of a home you shared, or an inside joke that has survived the decade.
- Ten years. Still you.
- Decade one.
- 3,652 days. Ten years is 3,652 or 3,653 days, depending on whether two or three leap days fell inside yours. Count them; getting it exactly right is the point.
- X, with your wedding date beneath it.
- Your wedding date and this year's, with an arrow between them: 6.14.2016 → 6.14.2026.
- Precious before it was everyday. A quiet nod to aluminum's history.
- Your kids' names under yours: the people who weren't at the wedding.
- The coordinates of every home you've shared, one per pin.
- The inside joke that has survived a decade.
How should we celebrate our 10th anniversary?
Mark it with something you do together as well as something you give. Four ideas that fit the year: seal letters to each other in a tin time capsule, plant ten daffodil bulbs, take the wedding ring in for a cleaning and prong check, and go back to the place on your map for dinner.
- Fill a tin time capsule. Write each other a letter to open at twenty years, and seal it in an actual tin with a photo from this year. It's the most literal tin gift there is.
- Plant ten daffodil bulbs. The daffodil is the tenth anniversary flower, and bulbs planted in fall come up in spring, so a fall anniversary gets a second one.
- Take the ring in for a check. Ten years of daily wear loosens prongs, and many jewelers clean and inspect rings for free. Do it before you add a new diamond to the same hand.
- Go back to the place on your map. If the tray shows where you married, have dinner there, ten years later.
How far ahead should I order a 10th anniversary gift?
Order about ten days before your anniversary to be comfortable. Everything is made to order: production takes one to two business days, and free standard shipping adds about two more, so most orders arrive within three to five business days. If your design needs a proof, production starts once you approve it.
Express shipping is available at checkout. If your date is close, message us before you order and we'll tell you plainly whether we can make it.
10th anniversary FAQ
What is a tin anniversary?
A tin anniversary is the 10th wedding anniversary, named after its traditional gift. Tin-plated cans kept food good for years, which is why tin is read as keeping what matters. Aluminum shares the same line of the traditional list, so an aluminum gift counts as a tin anniversary gift too.
How much should I spend on a 10th anniversary gift?
There's no rule; spend what fits the year you're having. Our personalized aluminum pieces run from $80 to $160. Diamond jewelry starts in the hundreds and runs well into the thousands. If you're giving both, the keepsake adds little to the total and carries the part a ring can't: your story.
Will an aluminum anniversary gift rust?
No. Rust is iron oxide, and aluminum contains no iron. Bare aluminum instead forms an oxide layer about five nanometers thick that protects it from further corrosion. To keep a printed aluminum piece looking new, wipe it with a soft, dry cloth and skip abrasive cleaners.
What's a good 10 year anniversary gift for a husband?
Something with a job to do. An aluminum wireless charging tray or map tray sits on his nightstand holding his phone, watch and ring, so it's used every day instead of stored. For the wall, our aluminum star map is the tenth anniversary piece customers review most.
What's a good 10 year anniversary gift for a wife?
A piece that holds ten years of somewhere: a glow-in-the-dark star map of your wedding night, a magnet pin map of every home and trip, or a photo of the family you've become, printed on aluminum. If diamond jewelry is on the list too, these pair with it rather than compete.
What anniversary comes after tin and aluminum?
Year eleven is steel and year twelve is silk or linen. Steel is iron refined, so if you marked your sixth with iron, the eleventh brings that metal back in its strongest form. See our 11th anniversary steel gifts and 12th anniversary linen gifts.
What's the best 10 year anniversary gift?
The best 10 year anniversary gift holds something specific to the two of you: the night you married, the place you met, the family you've become, or a sentence only they would understand. For most couples that means a tin or aluminum keepsake, a diamond if one has been hoped for, or both.
Aluminum spent its first decades as a treasure and the century since as the most everyday metal in the house. That's not a bad description of a marriage at ten: the precious things have become everyday ones, and they're no less precious for it. Find the night, the place, the photo or the sentence that belongs to the two of you, and we'll put it on something made to stay.
