The traditional 6th anniversary gift is iron. The modern list swaps in wood, and in the UK the sixth is the sugar anniversary. Iron is the one most couples build around: it's strong, it lasts, and at year six it's the first metal the anniversary list has ever handed you.
That last part is the interesting bit, and it's where most gift lists skip straight to cast-iron pans and horseshoes. This guide covers what iron actually says about six years of marriage, how it compares with wood and sugar, what to write on it, and the iron pieces we make in our Berkeley studio, with who each one is for.

Why is iron the 6th anniversary gift?
Iron marks six years because the traditional list moves from fragile materials to durable ones as a marriage ages: paper at one, cotton at two, leather at three, linen at four, wood at five. Iron at six is the first metal on the list, the point where the relationship stops being something that's still growing and becomes something that holds.
It's worth knowing the list is a convention, not an heirloom. Tying metals to milestone anniversaries goes back centuries in German-speaking Europe (silver at 25, gold at 50), but the year-by-year list most Americans use was filled in much later. The American National Retail Jewelers Association published an expanded version in 1937. So nobody is grading you on the rules. The logic underneath them is good, though, and iron at six is one of the best-chosen years on the list.
What iron says about year six (that a skillet doesn't)
"Strength" is what every card says. Here's what iron says when you look at it more closely.
It's forged, not found. The oldest way to join two pieces of iron is forge welding. A blacksmith heats both to a white glow and hammers them together until there's no seam left: one bar, not two. Nobody gets to year six without some heat either. The seam disappears because of it, not in spite of it.
It's the first thing on the list that was never alive. Paper, cotton, leather, linen, wood: every material before year six once grew. Iron is mineral. Five years of things that can tear, fray or burn, and then something that won't.
It rusts if you ignore it. This is the part greeting cards leave out. Iron is strong, but it isn't maintenance-free, and left wet and forgotten it corrodes. Six years in, with jobs and maybe kids and maybe a mortgage, that's the most useful thing the metal has to say: strength is something you keep up, not something you have. (The pieces below won't rust on your nightstand. See the FAQ.)
It's already in both of you. An adult body carries about three to four grams of iron, most of it in the blood cells that carry oxygen. Iron is also the most common element on Earth by mass, most of it packed into the planet's core, the part that holds everything together and that nobody ever sees. As metaphors go, you could do a lot worse.
Iron, wood, or sugar? Traditional vs. modern 6th anniversary gifts
Iron is the traditional US gift, wood is the modern US gift, and sugar is the traditional UK gift. Choose iron for the classic and a keepsake that lasts, wood if your person loves warm natural materials, and sugar if you'd rather give a moment than an object. Or combine two.
| Iron | Wood | Sugar | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Which list | Traditional (US) | Modern (US) | Traditional (UK) |
| What it stands for | Strength that's been forged and tested | Roots; something still growing | The sweet, everyday parts |
| How long it lasts | Decades | Decades | About a week |
| Works best as | Keepsakes, wall art, things used daily | Home pieces, frames, trays | An experience or shared treat |
| Watch out for | Heavy "industrial" gifts that don't suit your home | Repeating last year: wood is also the traditional 5th | The generic box of chocolates |
That last wood point matters more than most guides admit. If you gave wood for your fifth, the modern list has you giving it twice in a row, which is one more reason to go with iron this year.
You don't have to choose, though. Our iron catchall tray comes in ash or walnut, so one gift covers the traditional and modern lists at once. For sugar, skip the generic chocolates and give sweets with a history: a small version of your wedding cake from the original bakery, or candy from the town where you honeymooned, set next to the iron gift.
6th anniversary iron gift ideas, and who each one is for
Every piece below is made to order in our Berkeley, California studio. Niki lays out each design by hand rather than dropping names into a template, and shipping is free.
1. Personalized iron map tray: for the place it all started
Personalized Iron Map Tray · from $99
A catchall tray printed with a custom map of one place: where you met, your first apartment, the venue, the city you moved to together. It sits on a nightstand or entry table and holds the ring, keys and watch, so it gets handled twice a day without anyone thinking of it as decor.
This is our most-reviewed iron piece, and the reviews that mention the occasion follow a pattern: wives giving it to husbands for their sixth. "It is Gorgeous! My husband loved it. We just celebrated our 6th anniversary and it came the day of," wrote Mandy. Courtney called hers "a perfect mesh of iron for our 6 year." Her husband is a cartographer.
Best for: the husband who empties his pockets onto the dresser every night, or anyone who says they don't want "stuff." Small 5×5 in ($99) or large 8×8 in ($119).
2. Custom wording iron tray: for the thing you've never said out loud
Custom Iron Wording Tray · from $89
The same everyday tray with your words in place of a map: a line from your vows, a date and two names, the nickname only you use. There are wording ideas further down this page.
Best for: the partner who keeps every card you've ever written. Small 5×5 in ($89) or large 8×8 in ($109).
3. Iron catchall tray in ash or walnut: for covering both lists
Personalized Iron Catchall Tray · $89 ash, $99 walnut
Personalized with a map or your own wording. Iron for the traditional list, wood for the modern one.
Best for: the person who will absolutely look up the modern gift too.
4. Glow-in-the-dark iron star map: for one night that changed everything
Personalized Iron Star Map · from $109
The night sky exactly as it looked above a place and date you choose: your wedding night, the night you met, the night one of you said it first. By day it reads as clean wall art. With the lights off, the stars glow. Glow-in-the-dark star maps are a technique Niki introduced to this market years before they became common.
Best for: the romantic, and a bedroom wall. 8×10 ($109), 10×12 ($129) or 12×16 in ($159), black or white frame, with room for coordinates, vows or your own wording.
5. Iron photo wall art: for the photo from the years since
Personalized Iron Photo Wall Art · from $109
Your photo printed onto iron, in color or black and white. One suggestion: skip the wedding photo. It's probably on a wall already. Year six is about the years since: the road trip, the first house with no furniture, the blurry one from the hospital. Pick the photo you both stop scrolling on.
Best for: whoever keeps the family photos. 8×10 ($109), 10×12 ($129) or 12×16 in ($159).
6. Iron map with pins: for six years of places
Iron Map with Custom Magnet Pins or Iron Map Wall Art with Push Pins · from $99
A USA, world, or city and state map with pins for where you've been and where you're going. It's the only gift on this list that isn't finished when you give it; the empty space is for the next six years. Iron is one of the few everyday metals a magnet will grip, which makes the magnet-pin version a small bit of material honesty.
Best for: the traveler, and couples who've moved a lot. 8×10 ($99), 10×12 ($129) or 12×16 in ($149). More in our travel map collection.
7. Iron desk clocks: for the one who works long hours
Handmade Iron Desk Clock · $129, with a "6 Years" design or your own wording
Iron Photo Desk Clock · $129 black and white, $139 color
A clock is the most literal anniversary gift there is. It counts the time. Put one on a desk and your anniversary turns up in the middle of a Tuesday afternoon.
Best for: the office-bound or work-from-home partner.

What to write on a 6th anniversary gift
There is no set formula for anniversary gift messages. We always recommend something that's meaningful and expresses you. But here are some recommendations and examples to make this part of your gifting process easier:
- Six years. Still choosing you.
- Forged, not found. Add your names and wedding date underneath.
- As iron sharpens iron. From Proverbs 27:17; the full line is "as iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another."
- 2,191 days and counting. Six years is 2,191 or 2,192 days, depending on how many leap days fell inside yours. Count them; getting it exactly right is the point.
- VI, with your wedding date beneath it.
- The coordinates of the place one of you said yes.
- Year six. Stronger than year one.
- The first text they ever sent you.
- The inside joke nobody else would understand.
How to celebrate a 6th anniversary: the iron, wood and sugar edition
- Take a beginner forging class together. Many cities have intro blacksmithing sessions, and you'll go home with something iron you made yourselves.
- Cook your wedding meal at home in a cast-iron pan. There's the skillet. It just doesn't have to be the gift.
- Go back to the place on your map. If the tray shows where you met, have dinner there.
- Order a six-inch version of your wedding cake from the original bakery. The sugar anniversary, done properly.

6th anniversary FAQ
What is the traditional 6th anniversary gift? Iron, on the traditional US list. It stands for strength and permanence: a bond that has been tested and holds. The traditional UK list uses sugar instead.
What is the modern 6th anniversary gift? Wood. Because wood is also the traditional 5th anniversary material, many couples who gave wood last year choose iron for the sixth, or combine the two with something like an iron tray finished in walnut.
Is the 6th anniversary iron or sugar? Both, depending on where you live. Iron is the US traditional gift and sugar is the UK's. Plenty of couples do both: an iron keepsake plus a sweet treat with a story behind it.
What's a good 6 year anniversary gift for a husband who says he doesn't want anything? Give him something with a job to do. A personalized iron map tray holds his keys, watch and ring every day, so it never reads as decoration. It's also the iron piece that comes up most in our reviews from wives buying for their husbands.
Will an iron anniversary gift rust? Not with normal indoor use. Our iron pieces are sealed with a protective finish. Keep them dry, dust with a soft cloth, and skip water and household cleaners.
What anniversary comes after iron? Year seven is copper (or wool). Iron comes back, in a way, at year eleven: steel is iron refined with carbon, which makes a nice pairing if you mark both. See our 7th anniversary copper gifts and 11th anniversary steel gifts.
Six years, in something that lasts
Paper was a promise. Iron is proof. Find the place, the night, the photo or the sentence that belongs to the two of you, and we'll put it on something made to stay.
